I’m a military mom, twice blessed. It’s no secret my support for the military and what these troops accomplish. The pressure they are under to make decisions, manage conflict, problem solve, be creative and innovative is a breeding ground for future employees.
I’ve heard concerns about their mental stability related to all they’ve experienced. Are they a danger to our environment? Are they unstable? How will they do under extreme high stress situations?
Enter Crains Chicago Business. They addressed this head on with FOCUS Veterans in the Workplace, which is a forum for Illinois based companies who honor, recruit and hire veterans. They share insight into what you get when hiring a veteran.
Bottom line? You're hiring the best of the best. Veterans are highly-trained people whose skill-sets translate into any environment.
When hiring a veteran:
- Your environment will benefit from a hardworking, results-driven individual who is always ready and willing to do what ever needs to be done for the better of the company.
- Know that extreme pressure will not rock them. Not unless you're trying to kill them. In which case, that’s the coworker I want on my side. He knows how to protect his battle buddies and you, as his co-worker are his battle buddy.
- Understand that management abilities are part of their critical thinking. Need someone to think outside the box? Your vet will provide that. They know how to problem solve out of any situation you present them with.
- Know that they're team players. It's like putting one foot in front of the other for these highly trained individuals. They will rally their teams and get results.
- Want loyalty? Theirs is second to none. They are loyal and honest, quick to support and represent their employer with honor.
