Social Media for Beginners

Written by Nicole Fassl | May 15, 2013 9:00:02 AM

When I first started managing social media, at times, I was confused with what I was doing. For some things, I just didn’t understand the purpose. I’d ask myself questions like, Does this really make a difference? Is anyone reading this? Am I wasting my time? Why am I talking to myself? Why am I STILL talking to myself? Everyone else in our company was on top of it. They seemed to think it was very important. So I knew it was just me.

What was I missing?

When I really started to think about it, I figured everyone I know has Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Twitter. I was on most social networks, and I used them a good amount, so maybe there was something there. But what?

By immersing myself in social media for business, I caught on and realized there’s a lot more to social than meets the eye.

So...How do I get this started?

  • Talk about what people want to hear. Have fun with it!

  • If there is not much to work with on the side of entertainment, draw them in with the best of what you have to work with. You can make anything entertaining, while still being professional.

  • Check to see what other people are doing.

  • Look out for that buyer persona and create what they want and need. If you do that, you’re going to do pretty well.

  • Tweet, post on Facebook, join LinkedIn and start blogging. You will see a huge difference with the blogging. Our company has. Check out these awesome statistics.

I also noticed that all these other small marketing projects I was doing were very important. They were like the cement base to all of our social media projects. Things like:

  • Following people on Twitter and “liking” Pages on Facebook, to build a bigger audience.

  • Sharing what you find or create on every social network you have.

  • Writing some killer blogs, so you can draw people in.

  • Join webinars to keep soaking up new information.

Pretty soon, you’ll no longer be a beginner, but a social media for business master.
