Social Media: Privacy and Settings 101

I don’t know about you, but I am all about my privacy. This may currently mean nothing to my children but it still applies to everything else in my life, most importantly, online. More specifically, social media. It’s great to entertain our audience, but sometimes we don’t want or need our whole audience to see what we post or who we are talking to, especially when it comes to sales. This is totally understandable and it doesn’t have to be this way.

Security settings on social have really become robust. Luckily, these networks understand our feelings about privacy. However, if you don’t know how to adjust your settings, I’m here to help.

LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter are the three top social platforms that you are either on or should be on. All of these sites provide you with security settings and all it takes is a couple clicks of a mouse. This is your lesson on taking control of your social media security. Let’s do this.

Note: all of these can be accessed in your settings.

LinkedIn

Perhaps you are talking to another client or customer and you would like to keep it private. Here is a screenshot of your security options:

Above you can see, there are many options available on LinkedIn. One that you may find very important - Who can see your connections. I was once told by a sales rep that he wasn’t comfortable with other people seeing his customers on LinkedIn, this is where changing your privacy settings can prevent this. Other helpful settings that can be adjusted are editing your profile, who can see that you have edited your profile, choosing whether people can see if you have visited their profile, who can see you active on LinkedIn and how/if you want your last name to appear. LinkedIn is a great platform for businesses and you don’t have to hold back from using it due to concerns of privacy. Go in and adjust your settings so you can use it to it’s fullest potential.

Facebook

Considering that 25% of Facebook users don’t bother with privacy settings, it seems that people aren’t as concerned about them OR they don’t know how to use them.

When it comes to Facebook, most of us use it for fun but some of us might use it for business. With that being said, here are your options in Settings:

These settings can be edited but you will typically see the options as listed above. You can edit who can see your posts or your friends list, who can send you friend requests and who can look you up via email, phone number or search engines such as Google. Facebook is a robust platform. It is not a platform you want to avoid.

Twitter

In Settings and Privacy, there are a range of options to choose from. Aside from creating private lists that are only visible to you, there are more options available to make sure this platform will work for you. Take a look:

Above you can see that there are a multitude of options available for Twitter as well. Adjust who sees your tweets when you share them, where/if you would like to share your location, who can tag you, how people can contact you and more.

Again, there are always options, you just have to use them. So no more excuses. It’s almost 2018 and if your competition isn’t already on social, they will be. Get started now and become the leader, not the follower. As always, if you have any questions, we at KBK Communications are here to help answer them. Contact us today!
