The Benefits of Working Remotely

Written by Nicole Fassl | May 24, 2013 9:05:19 AM

According to a uSamp survey of 1,000 Americans, 65 percent of companies allow remote work, and an even higher percentage of big companies take advantage of home and virtual offices.

Have you ever thought about working remotely? If not, you should. While it’s not for everyone, there are so many benefits to virtual offices.

Here are some of my favorites:
- You don’t have someone standing over your shoulder all day (which allows for creative freedom)

- You have to take risks and make executive decisions, which can lead to some pretty great turn outs

- You aren’t confined to a 9-5 workday

I did work with my other coworkers for awhile, but I had to move. Obviously, to make this actually we work, we have to be able to hold each other accountable... and we have. For me, it works really well. I’ve learned a lot more, because I don’t have someone there to answer my questions, at all times.

Under Pressure

The pressure is off from your coworkers, but you now learn to put more pressure on yourself. Essentially...you grow up. KBK Communications is one of THE most organized businesses I’ve ever worked for. There are so many resources available, that I don’t really need much more help.

Here’s how we make working remotely work:

  • We have weekly blog calls via video chat, so we can make it more personal (and make sure everyone is in the loop and paying attention.)

  • We have collaborative editorial calendars that we can all make changes to.

  • We have other video brainstorming chats, where we develop ideas for not only our customer’s blogs, but ours as well.

  • We all track our time, so we know exactly how much time we are spending on each individual client.

  • We also have Yammer. This is somewhat like Facebook, but just for our business. We can chat, private message, upload files, comment and ‘like’ each others comments.

  • Lastly, we can just call each other.

Do you work virtually? If so, what’s your secret to staying connected? I’d love to hear from you, in the comments, below!
